Selective colour photography
Here are some example images you may want to download. Save one in your user area, and open it in Fireworks. Alternatively, use one of your own images:

Using the Magic Wand tool or Lasso tool
1) Try using the Magic Wand tool first. Click on the part of the image you want to retain its colour. You may need to increase the "Tolerance" number at the bottom.
2) If this doesn't work well, you may need to use the lasso tool to highlight this area. You use the Lasso tool to trace around the area you want to keep the same.
3) Go to Select on the Menu ribbon and choose Select inverse.
4) Go to Filters, then Adjust Color, and then Hue/Saturation...
5) Change the Saturation to -100. This will make the other area black & white.
6) Go to Select on the Menu ribbon and choose Deselect.
However, if the background is quite complicated, you may prefer to use Layers and a Mask.
An alternative way, using Layers and a Mask
1) Click on your image and copy it (Edit/Copy).
2) On the right-hand side of Fireworks, where it says Layers, click on Layer 1 and paste it (Edit/Paste).

6) Highlight the bottom layer. Go to Filters, then Adjust Color, and then Hue/Saturation... Change the Saturation to -100. |
7) Click on the Mask on the top layer, then use the Eraser tool on the main image to "rub out" colour from the areas you don't want colour. |
8) The final result, after rubbing away colour from the top layer. |
